Since no grading categories exist for this course, the Instructor must add and
configure them. The "Add New Category" page asks for the name of the category, its
percentage weighting, its scoring method, and its assessment allocation.
The percentage weighting is the amount of the overall course grade that is allocated to the sum of assessments for that category. The scoring method describes all assessments in that category. If a typical assessment score is 45 points out of 50, select "Points". If a typical assessment score is B+, select "Letter Grade". The assessment allocation for letter grade scored assessments is equal. The assessment allocation option gives an Instructor control in assigning a default weighting to point scored assessments. Within the category if all points for all assessments have equal weight, select "By Points". Instead, if all assessments have equal weight regardless of their respective points possible, select "Equal". For example, say there are two assessments, "Homework 1" worth 10 points, and "Homework 2" worth 20 points. When "By Points" is selected Homework 2 is worth twice as much as Homework 1. When "Equally" is selected both Homework 1 and Homework 2 are equal in worth. Further granularity control in weighting assessments is found under the Assessments link. The number of of droppable assessments allows the Instructor to drop any number of lowest scores within this category for each student. (eg. For best 8 out of 10, you would choose to drop the lowest 2 assessments.) |
